Marathon Man II,
12/04/2007

Our very own Guy Gibson battles wind and rain (and a throat infection to boot) to finish this years Marathon!
Congratulations to Guy Gibson who completed this years race in a very respecatable 4 hours 51 mins rasing a huge amount of money for ASBA

"Unlike last year’s Ironman Triathlon (see previous article), final preparations for "London" were less than ideal (a worsening throat infection). In an attempt however to appease the sponsors and rattling from handfuls of hastily swallowed antibiotics, the day went ahead anyway - kill or cure!

Arrived in glorious sunshine and completed the warm up en-mass. Lined up next to a 9-foot tall robot, a pink panther and a man that made Borat looked overdressed !

Once away (ten minutes after the gun), got bottlenecked in a group following Kate Lawler (Big Brother) and actually came to a standstill at Cutty Sark for several minutes, probably due to an oversize Cornish Pasty blocking the route - quite a day already!

Moving on and hopping between runners that by now were starting to slow up, I was starting to gear up for a low four hour finish. The crowds were 10 deep all along the route (no exaggeration) with music ranging from laid back Jazz (??) to pulsating drummers (conveniently positioned beneath an underpass where the acoustics were unbelievable).

Uh-oh, with about 7 miles to go, "the wheels came off" and my four hour finish was slipped from my grasp amid a torrential downpour. I slowed unceremoniously to a hobble ( ..time for your medication, Mr Gibson! ) and could not get going again. The last few miles took an age and I’m dreading the photos appearing.

Finally finished in 4:51:34, collected my Centenary Medal, and quickly away for some judicious re-hydration!! "
